Shiv Nandi Story | Bhole Shankar is the God of Gods. According to Hindu Puranas, Shiva is the only deity who gets pleased very quickly with the worship of his devotees. Lord Bhole Shankar’s attire is the most different and unique. Nandi Maharaj is the vehicle of Lord Bhole Shankar. According to the Puranas, Nandi’s father is Shilad Rishi. Nandi had got a boon from Lord Shiva that whenever any of his devotees come to see him, he will first see Nandi. Therefore, whenever a devotee goes to the Shivalaya to worship Lord Shiva, he first sees Nandi Maharaj at the gate of the Shivalaya outside the temple. And this is the reason why he is also considered the gatekeeper of Lord Shiva.

According to Hindu mythology, Nandi was the son of Shilad Rishi. While observing the Brahmachari Vrat, Shilad Rishi feared that his lineage would end after his death without a child. Therefore, he decided to adopt a child to carry forward his lineage. Rishi Shilad made up his mind, but the dilemma was that the Rishi wanted to adopt a child who would be blessed by Lord Shiva. For this, he did a rigorous penance of Lord Shiva. Pleased with the penance, Lord Shiva blessed him with a son and left from there.

The next day when Rishi Shilad was passing through the field, he found a newborn baby. The Rishi started looking here and there to find the child’s parents, when he heard a voice from the sky and Lord Shiva said that this is your son. Rishi Shilad brought that child to his home and started raising him with great love and imparted the knowledge of the entire Vedas to him.

Time passed very fast and that little child grew up. Once two divine sages came to Shilad Rishi’s ashram, in whose service Nandi left no stone unturned. Seeing Nandi’s service, both the divine sages were very happy, but they gave the blessing and boon of long life to Shilad Rishi. They neither gave Nandi any kind of blessing nor boon. Seeing this, Rishi Shilad wanted to know the reason for this, then both the divine sages told that Nandi has a short life. Hearing this, Shilad Rishi became very sad. When Nandi asked his father the reason for his sadness, then Shilad Rishi told Nandi what both the divine sages had told. Hearing this, Nandi started laughing and said, Lord Shiva! Will protect me.

After this, Nandi performed a rigorous penance of Lord Shiva, pleased with which Shiva appeared before Nandi, then Nandi said that he wants to stay in his company for the rest of his life. Lord Shiva was so pleased with Nandi’s dedication that he gave Nandi the face of a bull and made him his vehicle and included him in his group and also blessed him that wherever he would reside, Nandi would also be there.
